JULY AUTHOR FEATURE: YORK, PENNSYLVANIA

POET LAUREATE:

CARLA CHRISTOPHER

Carla, can you give us a little background information about yourself?

I'm the daughter of a jazz musician and an art gallery owning poet. I am also the daughter of a business professor and a law professor! Just depends on which part of the day you found them in! I have pretty much thought, breathed and slept in art since I was born and that's just how I see the world. My mom and I have lived all over, from hooker hotels in Detroit to missionary compounds in North Carolina, and I learned early on to find beauty everywhere. It all comes out in my work. A bad accident ended my dreams of dancing in my early teens so I spent high school in community theatre then sang my way across Europe for a while before going to school. I think that's what lets me have so much fun on the stage as a poet now. I move like a dancer, express myself like an actress...but the words are from my heart. My purest self. Poetry is now my home.

What projects are you currently working on?

I just released a new book, 'Addicted to Relapse', about all the nutsy decisions we make as women in life and relationships. I have been blessed to tour pretty heavily with the book and I am loving the generous responses of the audiences. It means a lot to me when someone says a poem of mine really reached them. I also run a local press in York County, PA that caters to first time authors from marginalized communities who might not get the time, attention and support from larger houses. I have young, gay and lesbian, mentally ill and female authors just to name a few communities...and working with them to edit their work moves and inspires me. I also host and produce a television show for White Rose Community TV in York/Hanover, Pennsylvania. It's a cultural showcase featuring studio performances and interviews with local members of the arts community. I've profiled over 75 artists just in the last 6 months! The talent in South Central PA is incredible!!! Along with that, I am still the Poet Laureate for York City and do plenty of school visits, poems for civic events like the recent 150th anniversary of the Civil War occupation of York and judge local competitions. I also host two monthly venues, a poetry/music night at King's Courtyard Artist Collective on 3rd Fridays and a spoken word night at Club Quebec on 3rd Saturdays. Sleep is totally optional in my world!

What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of your journey as an independent artist?

Sustainability and time management. It's hard to keep everything straight skipping around between coordinating TV show guests and filming days, time to edit and meet with authors, my own performances, remembering to keep up the Twitter and Facebook accounts... I do actually need sleep sometimes, and time with family and friends and self. It's important to practice good self care, eat well and rest peacefully, pray and meditate and have experiences that restore my energy and keep me inspired. That way I have something to write about when the writing time comes! Then there is that pesky matter of paying the bills. There isn't the same respect for a poet's time and work as there are for say, a band of musicians. Most venues don't pay or pay little, books sell a handful at a time and advertising money takes a lot of work to get. Like most artists, I would rather spend my time creating, but I spend just as much if not more time making sure I can afford to create. It's just about finding and maintaining a balance.

Tell us something about you as an artist that people would be surprised to know.

Well, you already know that I used to dance, act and sing which many people don't know about me. They are used to me only as Carla Christopher, York Poet Laureate or Carla Christopher of PoemSugar Press. I guess who most people DON'T know me as, and would be surprised to find out, is my non-performing self. My close friends and family actually call me by my middle name (Juliana, or Julie) and with them I am a very silly, nerdy, introspective and quiet girl who is usually in the background playing with the kids or the animals or off reading a book. I love, love, love getting to work with the beautiful and talented artists in the area and it means the world to me to be able to move people emotionally, or to promote a love and awareness of poetry in the city. I love being sassy or sensual or brassy and bold when I perform. That's only one side of me though.

You have had quite a few accomplishments as the 4th person to hold the Poet Laureate of York, PA title. What accomplishment are you most proud of during your tenure?

The development of the overall scene in York. The fact that musicians and artists are now including poets automatically in conversations about the art scene. The increased audiences at our local poetry readings. The fact that those audiences include tons of young people, tons of non-poets, tons of people of color, tons of artists from other genres. That is awesome to me to see. I always knew poetry was cool...I just love that a few more people agree with me now!

Are there any famous writers that inspire your work? Did you model your early writings after anyone?

Maya Angelou was a huge inspiration to me. I saw her in person in high school and her smooth, playfully sarcastic manner impressed me as much as the classical flow and inspiration of her work. I saw her recently and she spoke about poetry and the importance of knowing the classics, she even recited Invictus and classical Greek poetry. I appreciated that, her seriousness about her craft. Langston Hughes is an inspiration to me. Just a beautiful, bold, Black, gay man who found the beauty in even the harshest aspects of the human experience. I adore Audre Lorde for similar reasons. I am also a true romantic and sensualist at heart so I adore the poetry of Rumi, Pablo Neruda, Walt Whitman and Khalil Gibran. That is where I go to when my soul needs restoration.

Where do you find yourself feeling most creative? (Is there a specific place, time of day, what sparks it for you?)

When I first wake up, before the day's obligations start to call me or between midnight and 3am, when the quietest part of the night has settled in and I know I can't be loud so housework is out and it's too late to make phone calls. Nature has always soothed me, so I spend a lot of time reading in parks. Music also really helps me write. Several of my best poems have come from sitting in the back of a smoky bar listening to a music open mic or a favorite band play with a glass of wine off to the side.

What will you do (as a creative outlet) after the Laureate position ends?

Buy a giant bottle of Sangria and take my notebook to a beach somewhere for a month! After that though, it'll be back to my venues and PoemSugar Press and episodes of Culture & Main and writing a new book I hope. I really want to do a CD and teach more classes. Grow the publishing company so I can help even more writers realize their dreams. Poetry is my love and my life. I'll never stop as long as God keeps waking me up.

How do you define crazy?  Is it someone who is just totally off and doing erratic stuff?  Is it the co-worker next to you who talks to himself all day?  Is it one of your family members?

What is "crazy" to you?

Crazy for me was not believing in Waid Books.

From the beginning I knew pretty much what I wanted this company to look like.  I took my time, developed some skills, sought out the right people for necessary tasks and got down to the business of writing and trying to reach my audience.

Of course there have been setbacks along the way.  Money was funny and change was strange but I kept walking in the direction that would ultimately lead to success.

Now with 2 books published, 1 book launch party down, 3 authors on board and several projects on tap, I can smell success brewing. Success smells really good!  For me it's not about the number of sales, the big publishing companies coming to call or even how many likes I have on Facebook or followers on Twitter.  It's about getting this written word into the hands of those that love to read.  Period.

"I'm going to succeed because I'm crazy enough to think I can."

 Recipe time!!!

June is the month for delicious cherries!  In honor of that we are featuring a recipe for Sweet Cherry Pie found here:

http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2008/06/sweet-cherry-pie/

Ingredients:

Dough for a double-crust pie
4 cups of fresh pitted cherries (approximately 2 1/2 lbs unpitted)
4 tbs cornstarch
2/3 to 3/4 cup of sugar (adjust according to sweetness of cherries)
1/8 tsp of salt
Juice of 1/2 of a lemon
1/4 tsp of almond extract
1 tbs cold, unsalted butter, cut into small bits

1 egg, beaten witih 2 tbs water
Coarse sugar, for decoration.

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

Stir together cherries, cornstarch, sugar, salt. lemon and almond extract gently together in a large bowl.

Roll out half of chilled dough (use larger piece if you've divided them unevenly) on a floured work surface to a 13-inch round.  Gently place it in a 9-inch pie pan either by rolling it around the rolling pin and unrolling it over the pan or by folding it into quarters and unfolding it in the pan.  Trim edges to a half-inch overhang.

Spoon filling into pie crust, discarding the majority of the liquid that has pooled in the bowl.  Dot the filling with the bits of cold butter.

Roll out the remaining dough into a 12-inch round on a lightly floured surface, drape it over the filling, and trim it, leaving a 1-inch overhang.  Fold the overhang under the bottom crust, pressing the edge to seal it, and crimp the edge decoratively.  Brush the egg wash over pie crust, then sprinkle with coarse sugar.

Cut slits in the crust with a sharp knife, forming steam vents, and bake the pie in the middle of the oven for 25 minutes.  Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees and bake the pie for another 25 to 30 minutes more, or until the crust is golden brown.  Let the pie cool on a rack.

INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR LENI KING

Leni (short for Eleni) King is a British-Greek Lesbian writer who has produced several poetry collections and short stories.  King's work has been acclaimed for it's in-depth erotic insights into lesbian life as well as powerful and evocative imagery.  In her collection of poetry, Lesbian Juices, readers will find both hot and steamy erotic poetry as well as thought-provoking, romantic and spiritual poems.

Question 1:  Which do you find drives you more as an artist, your head or your heart?

I would have to say my heart.  Since my poems are about lesbian love, they are driven by the love of women and a desire to express myself in the poetic form.  Sales and ambition are about the head, but it's the desire for freedom of expression that gives me a buzz - and poetry can go beyond what prose or other forms of art can offer.  As a lesbian, this expression is especially important since our world has been such a taboo subject until recent years.

Question 2:  How does your poetry reflect who you are as a person?

My poems are fictional, but inevitably some are loosely based on my own experience.  For example, Brighton Belle was written after a one night stand.  At the time I felt rejected that the girl did not want to continue things.  However, with time I realized that this experience was a turning point in breaking away from my painful past.   Here is a sample:

You were my warming
My universe calling

I couldn't comprehend
Or cope just then
To find
The joy
Of the Divine
Within
Every
Living
Thing

Question 3:  Where do you see yourself (literature-wise) in 5 years?  Do you envision turning any of your work into stage plays or movies?

Wow, Waid Books - that's an exciting idea - stage plays or movies?  Perhaps when I finally publish my novel, but it's harder to adapt poetry for the big screen!  In five years time it would be great to have a novel published and some more poetry collections on the shelves and to have reached a wider audience and continued to get great feedback.

Question 4:  Who are some other authors that inspire your poetry?

Black feminist poet Audre Lorde (1934 - 1992) was an outspoken lesbian that I admire. Her poetry was highly political and she saw verse as an important medium to challenge all forms of discrimination and injustice.  I Agree with her sentiment:

"Poetry is the way we help give name to the nameless so it can be thought.  The farthest horizons of our hopes and fears are cobbled by our poems, carved from the rock experiences of our daily lives."

Also in her essay, Uses of the Erotic: The erotic as Power, she describes the importance of women recognizing, expressing and sharing our erotic feelings.

                                                               Poet Audre Lorde

William Shakespeare
 In addition, perhaps surprisingly, some of the classics such as Shakespeare, have been my biggest inspiration.  Shakespeare's best sonnets were, as you know, written to his male lover the anonymous young man.

In terms of short stories, one that deeply influenced me when I read it many years ago is Katherine Forest's erotic novella, O Captain, My Captain.  The poetry of John Donne is also among those all time greats that I admire most for their intensely metaphysical romantic imagery.  His ability to freeze a moment in time between lovers and shut out the rest of the world is awesome.

Question 5:  What are you currently working on?

I am currently completing Lesbian Juices Volume II.  this is a collection of very explicit love and erotic poetry as well as two 5,000 word short stories.

Question 6:  If you could let your readers know one ting about you/your work, what would it be?

I guess it would be the surprises they will find in my poetry and upcoming short stories.  The images range from very outspoken erotic acts, to spiritual enlightenment and the connection between the two.  I realize that is actually two things but like the "twin-soul" that I believe we have out there it's really one.

For example, here is an excerpt from the poem "Lost" (Lesbian Juices Volume 1) which hopefully illustrates the effectiveness of poetry as a medium for the expression of erotic love.  It also demonstrates how love can take us to a timeless, spiritual world.

When you whisper to me,
The cacophony of everyday life is
Silenced
Like a meadow upon the dawn

And only my own
Gentle moaning of pleasure
And your sweet song
Are playing, loudly

And when you press your
Naked body
Onto mine
Skin on skin
Breast on breast
Lips on lips

Oblivion rules
And I am powerless beneath you
Yet powerful
Feeling we can conquer anything
At this moment

When you suck me
The world spins
And I am floating
In another land
Entirely

 Waid Books Final Thought...

Artistic Prayers

Over the course of my artistic lifetime (from teen years to present day) I have prayed for a muse, a sign, a better pen and fresh inspiration.  My prayers are "confirmed" when they are answered and I am able to finish my latest work.

When you read, comment, write, paint, dance, sing or express yourself in any other way you are giving back to the universe in the most humble and positive way.  You are sharing a part of yourself that is innately you.

No one else can create what you create.

They can try to copy it, mimic it, bash it with criticism or not support you at all.  Yet at the end of the day it's still your work...and they can't do what you do, in the WAY that you do it.

Give those artistic prayers to your God, Higher Power, Muse, or Spirit Being and allow yourself to be inspired to create that next masterpiece.  Your soul and the universe will thank you.

THANK YOU FOR READING!  SEE YOU MID-MONTH!

WHAT'S NEW WITH WAID BOOKS

LOOK OUT ON AMAZON.COM FOR WAID BOOKS  UPCOMING TITLE RELEASE

"RECIPES FROM THE KITCHEN OF P-LOVE'S SMOKIN' RUB" - by  KEVIN "PETE" GROOM

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Books changed my life.  As a little girl I burned through books like most kids burned through toys.  I was obsessed with reading.
Now that I am making the transition to owning my own publishing company/small business I realize that the thing I loved the most (the written word) is now going to be the thing that changes my life again.
I write and read because it helps me to become my best self.  Might sound corny but books changed my perception of the world and people in general.  I was able to read about the types of people that I will probably never meet in real life.  Travel to places that I may never see.  Reading opened my world to the cosmos, magic, vampires and fantasy.
Writing helps me convey the things that I have a hard time saying out loud.  There are so many thoughts in my head, every day, all of the time.  It's nice to be able to put those thoughts on paper and share them with those that care to read them.
Owning Waid Books has slowly converted me into a believer.  A firm believer in myself and others!  It's an amazing gift to be able to collaborate with new authors and get them published, conduct book signings, Google Plus Hangouts, Live Chats and every other way I can reach readers and authors.
Changing your life is a step by step process.  It can be done!  Take that first step today and move toward something you would love to do for the rest of your life.  All it takes is a try.
COMING THIS MONTH FROM WAID BOOKS!!!
This is the tentative cover for the first recipe book to be published by Waid Books!  The owner of P-Love's Smokin' Rub has given us permission to "leak" this cover in anticipation of it's release in time for grilling season!
Kevin "Pete" Groom has been smoking various types of meat for his family and friends for the last 5 years.  He formulated his own seasoning rub and has decided to mass market it to the world.  If you'd like to buy a jar of the rub the company website is:  www.smokeandbbq.com
Kevin (affectionately known to all as "Pete") took a hobby and turned it into a business.  He is successful because he believes in his product and has allowed the world to feel his passion for his seasoning and dishes that he lovingly prepares.
PART 2 OF THE WAID BOOKS INTERVIEW WITH
AUTHOR R.H. RAMSEY
Ramsey's 2nd Book: Into the Atmosphere
(For questions 1 and 2 of this interview please click here:  http://waidbooks.blogspot.com/2013/04/waid-books-newsletterblog-april-2013-2.html)
3. If one of your characters could 'come to life" which one would you treat to dinner and why?
I have a character in Just Beneath the Surface named Diamond. She's a teenager, and in the story, she is operating out of hurt, and it is only causing her to spiral. I think that I would enjoy taking Diamond to dinner, not because I want to judge her or tell her things she probably already knows, but because what she needed more than anything else, was someone to talk to. She needed someone to tell her when she wasn't making sense. She needed to not feel invisible.
4. If it was possible, what advice would you share with your teen self?
  • Rhonda, you stay up way too late, but now I see why - you're a writer.
  • You're not overweight.
  • Tell your parents you love them.
  • You're going to wish you looked like that in ten years - didn't I just say cut it out?
  • Just say what you're thinking. It's valid and you're making a bad habit of internalizing - just say it.
  • Rhonda...I'm proud of you.
5. As a published author, what advice would you give to someone that is afraid to write/share their gift?
If you are afraid, you are probably afraid of rejection, failing, or you have written something that is very personal. Please understand: Your story deserves to be told. Remove "self" and never operate out of fear.
Take your work to people who will be honest with you. Remember to accept the constructive criticism and do away with anything mean-spirited.
Get your work edited, hear what the editor has to say, and move forward toward your goals!!
Remember to enjoy the journey, and don't lose touch with your passion and purpose. Share your gift, your passion and embrace your purpose!!
Waid Books would like to thank Ms. Ramsey for her time and thoughtful answers to our questions.  We wish her MUCH continued success.
THE WAID BOOKS RECIPE OF THE WEEK!
In honor of our first recipe book being released this month we would like to give you a "sneak peek" of the types of recipes that will be featured using P-Love's Smokin' Rub!
This sample recipe came from the P-Love's Smokin' Rub Group on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/285190544932529/?bookmark_t=group).  Feel free to join the discussion and like his community page as well: www.facebook.com/PLovesSmokinRub.
Cooking Question:
Pete, I'm using P-Love's Smokin' Rub on a beef brisket in the oven today...suggestions? I've never made one!!!??
P-Love's Suggestion:
Apply a generous amount of plain mustard to the beef. Apply 1/4 cup of the rub and massage into the meat.
Place beef in the oven on low (350 degrees). Make sure you have plenty of water in the pan as you don't want the meat to dry out while it's cooking.
Temp out at 190 and let rest for 10 minutes before slicing!
Here is a picture of the finished product!
Many thanks to Kevin "Pete" Groom for allowing Waid Books to be a part of his dream.  We look forward to working on more recipe books with him in the future!
Final Thought
With so many life-altering events happening every day in our ever-changing world, it is important to celebrate the small things in life.
A good book can often "take the edge off" and for just a moment allow you to enjoy a different time and place.  So treasure the great stories as you have time and leave the rest of the "madness" behind.
Always stay focused on your dreams, goals and desires and the world will have no choice but to bend to your will.
We wish you PEACE, JOY and GOOD READING!
